Developer building student housing complex
A developer has broken ground on a new student apartment complex near a college in the area.
Grand Rapids-based Orion Construction said this week conctruction has begun on The Lodges in Allendale, near Grand Valley State University. The apartment complex will feature 192 units for students by the beginning of the 2017-18 school year.
The 60-acre site and apartment development are owned by Zimmer Development of North Carolina. The cost of the project was not disclosed.
Eight three-story apartment buildings will be built, taking up about 15 acres of the site. The three- and four-bedroom apartments in the complex will create 576 beds for GVSU students.
Amenities for the complex will include free parking, a pool, a pool house and a clubhouse.
Zimmer Development has no plans for a second phase of the project, but it did purchase the site with intentions of filling the site based on demand.
Student housing projects
Orion Construction has made a commitment to partner with developers to provide student housing in Allendale, said Roger Rehkopf, president, Orion Construction.
The Lodges is the latest student housing project near GVSU, which also includes Orion partnerships with developers on Campus West, Meadows Crossing and the Grand Village.
Orion recently completed two phases at the Grand Village, which acts as Greek housing.
Orion Construction, founded in 2000, is a construction and development firm.
The company has projects across Michigan, including several downtown Grand Rapids projects, such as the recently completed Arena Place and the under-construction Venue Tower.
