Breweries medal at Great American Beer Festival

Several breweries in the region came away with awards from the Great American Beer Festival in Denver this month.

Ten Michigan breweries won medals at the 30th-annual event.

West Michigan winners

Grand Rapids-based Brewery Vivant won bronze in the Wood- and Barrel-Aged Sour Beer category for its Angelina.

Dutton-based Railtown Brewing Co. won bronze for its Good Mooed Milk Stout in the Sweet Stout or Cream Stout category.

Galesburg-based Bell’s Brewery’s won silver in the Aged Beer category for its Expedition Stout.

Grand Rapids-based Founders Brewing Co. took home silver in the Imperial Red Ale category for reDankulous, one of its Backstage Series brews.

In the German-Style Wheat Ale category, Cedar Springs Brewing Co. won bronze for its Kusterer Original Weissbier.

Portage-based Latitude 42 Brewing Co. won bronze in the Classic Irish-Style Dry Stout category for its Bangin The Mash.

Other Michigan winners

In the Smoke Beer category, Ann Arbor’s Wolverine State Brewing Co. took home gold for its Raucher.

Detroit Beer Co. won bronze for its Broadway Light, an American-Style Cream Ale.

Milford’s River’s Edge Brewing Co. won gold in the Export Stout category for its Dirty Frank Stout.

The bronze in the English-Style India Pale Ale category went to Royal Oak’s Roak Brewing Co. and its Live Wire.

Great American Beer Festival

The competition portion of the Great American Beer Festival awarded 286 medals to 254 brewers, chosen from 7,227 entries from 1,752 breweries from all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

The panel of judges included 264 experts from 12 countries.

Billings, Montana-based Uberbrew took home four medals, the most in the competition.

California’s Karl Strauss Brewing Co., North Carolina’s Brown Truck Brewery and Ohio’s Fat Heads’s Brewery and Saloon all took home three medals.
