Police arrest off-duty officer for drunken driving
A 23-year veteran of the Grand Rapids Police Department has been arrested for failing to report an accident and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
The 46-year-old officer was arrested on Sunday morning by state police after leaving the scene of a single-car crash while off duty.
Authorities said the officer's blood alcohol content was above the state's legal limit. Michigan driving laws define drunkenness as having a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent or higher.
The officer was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and then lodged in the Kent County jail. He has been placed on administrative leave.
State police are investigating the crash. Grand Rapids police said an administrative investigation also will be conducted.
