A Grand Rapids coffee and nut roaster has acquired a Kalamazoo-based nut company.

Ferris Coffee & Nut announced today it has acquired Lush Gourmet Foods as a wholly-owned subsidiary. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Lush Gourmet Foods will continue as its own brand, backed by Ferris’ support system, including its sales channels and manufacturing facility.

Production will relocate to Ferris Coffee & Nut headquarters, 227 Winter Ave. NW, early next year, while Lush’s founder, Bisera Urdarevik, will be creative director of product development at Ferris.

“We were immediately drawn to Bisera’s passion and spirit of entrepreneurship,” said Zach Malin, Ferris business unit manager of nuts and snacking. “Her creativity and work ethic makes her a natural fit on our team.

“We view this as an investment into her and her brand and are excited to offer Lush the ability to expand through our added resources and experience.”

A trained pastry chef from Kendall College in Chicago, Urdarevik founded Lush Gourmet Foods in 2011.

“Lush Gourmet has been a sweet and salty family tradition for generations and has grown exponentially over the past five years,” Urdarevik said. “It began as a culinary school project, honestly, that fueled my desire to recreate my mother’s family recipe with the highest quality ingredients I could find.”

Lush Gourmet Foods now distributes to more than 100 accounts in five states, including to retailers such as Whole Foods and Williams-Sonoma, in packages ranging in sizes from 0.8 ounces to 8 ounces.

Flavors of peanuts and almonds include Hot Curry, Coconut Orange Peel, Coconut Lavender, Dark Cocoa Chili, Salt and Pepper, Cinnamon Spice and Coffee. Lush Gourmet Foods produces the vegan snacks without additives or preservatives and they are gluten- and soy-free.

“I’m thrilled to partner with Ferris to explore additional opportunities while staying true to my family’s original recipe and commitment to quality,” Urdarevik said.
