A Grand Rapids company is cooking up new retail and production space.

The Cakabakery announced it will move into a 2,500-square-foot building, 919 E. Fulton St. The bakery will move from its current leased location, 1436 Wealthy St. SE, and the new space will open Nov. 23.

Cakabakery closed on the purchase of the new space on Oct. 10. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Colliers West Michigan Associate Vice President Mark Ansara brokered the deal for Cakabakery owners Jason Kakabaker and Peter Jacob.

“We’ve spent the last year looking for a live/work space where we could expand The Cakabakery,” Kakabaker said in a statement. “We really love the Uptown business districts and neighborhoods, so we wanted to make sure we could put down roots in this area.”

New space

The new building will allow for more production space and will include walk-in coolers and freezers, along with a larger kitchen for tastings.

Hours will also be expanded, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday

“With this larger space, we’ll now be able to open earlier on Saturdays and serve up new desserts such as cinnamon rolls, more last-minute cakes and decorated cookies daily,” Jacob said.

The bakery was founded by Kakabaker in his home in 2010.

The company expanded into a physical space in Eastown in 2013 and purchased Holland’s Second Floor Bakery in 2015.

The Cakabakery specializes in desserts, including cakes, cupcakes, cookies, tarts and caramel corn.
