A firm is planning to open a new restaurant and bar in town after receiving approval yesterday for outdoor seating and to serve alcohol from the Grand Rapids Planning Commission.

Citizen LLC plans to bring a 100-seat restaurant to 2115 Plainfield Ave. NE. It will include a 16-seat bar and a seasonal patio.

The restaurant plans to serve lunch and dinner during the week, along with brunch and dinner on the weekends.

The establishment is expected to create 20 jobs.

“We aim to serve world-class food and service, with a full bar and a tiki-bar-inspired cocktail menu,” says Rachel Lee, a representative for Citizen LLC, in a letter asking for the planning commission’s support.

Renovations

Plans call for a complete renovation of the building, which is currently vacant and was last used as a karate studio.

“We will transform the urban renewal façade to a transparent storefront, which will increase more eyes on the street,” Lee says.

Plans call for the elimination of four parking spaces in front of the building to make room for the outdoor patio. The project has a 19-space parking lot in the rear and accessibility will be improved with the addition of a rear-entry ramp.

“Our goal is to be a neighborhood gathering place and to add to the vitality of the already growing North Quarter,” Lee said.
