The state has awarded $5 million total to more than 120 employers in West Michigan for workforce training programs.

Michigan awarded the funds as part of its Skilled Trades Training Fund, or STTF, initiative for use by employers in the West Michigan Works! region in 2017.

The grants, totaling $5,092,812 in the region, were mainly awarded to manufacturing, technology, health care and construction sectors, with the largest grant in West Michigan going to Walker-based manufacturer Plasan Carbon Composites, at $164,145.

Deb Lyzenga, business services manager for West Michigan Works!, said West Michigan was the region that received the most funding out of all 10 regions in Michigan.

“I’ve been asked, ‘What is your secret sauce?’” she said. “I think what’s going on is we have a close-knit community of employers that work with us. We have consortiums of employers that work together across industry sectors. That’s one piece. And I have an incredible staff. They’re so committed to the employers.”

Lyzenga said the STTF grants will help fund apprenticeships and training for current workers and new hires.

“The most popular training we’re seeing…is the companies are upgrading their software systems — Linux, Cisco, etc. — and then there’s training for the workers to learn how to use these systems,” she said.

Skilled Trades Training Fund

The state’s Skilled Trades Training Fund began in 2013 and is on target to train more than 30,000 workers. STTF provides funds to companies for short term, in-demand training. Companies of all sizes have benefited from STTF, anywhere from three employees to more than 1,000. While the STTF has supported creation of more than 400 new apprentices, training is not limited to skilled-trade occupations. It has included robotics, IT training, electronic health records training and on-the-job training for workers to be hired.
