City building $2M community center

A city in the area is moving ahead with its plan for a $2-million community center in its downtown that’s anchored by a farmers market.

The City of Hudsonville said last week it has selected Grand Rapids-based Visser Brothers as the contractor to redevelop a former car dealership into the mixed-use Terra Square, at 3380 Chicago Dr.

Visser Brothers successfully submitted the low bid against four other qualified bids, coming in nearly $200,000 below the next lowest bid.

GMB Architecture + Engineering is the architect for the project.

The redevelopment of the building into a 10,000-square-foot community center is set to begin immediately, with an expected completion date of June.

“We are excited to be included in revitalizing the building into a facility the community can use and be proud of,” said Patrick Fate, project manager, Visser Brothers.

Terra Square

Terra Square is intended to highlight and embrace Hudsonville’s history as an agricultural community.

The single-story building will house the Hudsonville Farmers Market, a Midwestern-themed restaurant, Sonder Provisions, co-working space and event space, including a 4,000-square-foot gathering space.

On market days — from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays from June through October — the Terra Square parking lot will be transformed into an outdoor farmers market. About 2,000 square feet of indoor market space is available inside Terra Square.

The current building, which was constructed in 1949, had sat vacant for many years and was identified as a key redevelopment site by the city. It was purchased by the city and Hudsonville Downtown Development Authority, using cash reserves for the purpose of having a permanent home for the farmers market.

Funds

The majority of the project is funded from bonds by the City of Hudsonville, which required no increase in local taxes.

About $116,000 of a $200,000 fundraising goal has also been raised through donations by local businesses and individuals.
