A pair of downtown venues rank among the tops in the world and U.S. for ticket sales in 2016.

Pollstar magazine published its year-end issue on Jan. 16, and SMG-managed DeVos Performance Hall lands at No. 20 in the U.S. and No. 29 worldwide for theater venues of all sizes.

SMG-managed Van Andel Arena hits the No. 35 spot in the U.S. and the No. 29 position worldwide for arena venues of all sizes.

The rankings are based on ticket sales between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2016. During that period, DeVos Performance Hall sold 197,495 tickets worldwide, and Van Andel Arena sold 229,668 tickets worldwide.

Van Andel Arena’s ticket sales were helped along by its 20th-anniversary celebration, in which it sold a record-breaking number of tickets to its Elton John, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney shows.

“It is incredibly gratifying to see that the support we have from the community here and the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority isn’t going unnoticed,” said Rich MacKeigan, regional general manager, SMG.

“Without their loyalty and patronage, it would be very difficult to be successful.”

SMG has managed DeVos Place and DeVos Performance Hall since 1994 and Van Andel Arena since 1996.

Founded in 1977, SMG provides management services to more than 240 public assembly facilities, including convention and exhibition centers, arenas, stadiums, theaters, performing arts centers, equestrian facilities, science centers and a variety of other venues.
