A hotelier will begin construction tomorrow on a new seven-story hotel in downtown Grand Rapids — which has been years in the making.

Holland-based Suburban Inns said today it will start work on a $59-million Embassy Suites by Hilton at 710 Monroe Ave. NW, beginning with the demolition of a building at 737 Bond Ave. NW.

Construction, led by Grand Rapids-based Pioneer Construction, is expected to take between 18-24 months, with an opening tentatively planned for summer 2019.

A project at the site was originally proposed by Suburban Inns in 2007 and has seen several iterations.

“There have been a number of roadblocks on this project, but we have been committed to the project from day one,” said Peter Beukema, CEO, Suburban Inns. “It is important to us to do this right to be a positive asset in the community.

"We still have a few details to work through with the city and state, but if all continue on the track, the project cost will be about $59 million.”

The hotel will be the first Embassy Suites brand in Grand Rapids and feature 246 suites with views of the Grand River and downtown Grand Rapids.

The hotel will also include a Big E’s Sports Bar and Grill, an indoor pool, an indoor-outdoor spa, a lobby bar and a five-story parking garage. There will also be a banquet facility and meeting rooms.
