A renowned beer bar has announced the opening date for its Grand Rapids location.

Traverse City-based 7 Monks Taproom will open at 740 Michigan St. NE on April 21.

The beer bar is in a retail space on the ground floor of 616 Lofts on Michigan.

The company is owned by Jim Smolak and Matt Cozzens, while General Manager Jason Kasdorf curates the tap list at the locations, including 51 taps at the Grand Rapids location.

The beer menu focuses on bringing a collection of Michigan, national and international — particularly Belgian — beers to the taps.

Kasdorf said the opening tap list will contain plenty of hard-to-find and special beers, including beers produced specifically for 7 Monks by breweries, such as Short’s Brewing Co., a collaboration between Brewery Vivant and Schilling Beer Co. and Speciation Artisan Ales.

“We have been honored by great partnerships with some of the nation’s leading breweries,” Cozzens said.

The food menu features starters, like a meat-and-cheese board and pretzel bites, burgers, salads and entrees, like pesto pasta and Korean nachos.

The northern Michigan beer bar has been named among the best beer bars in the country by publications such as Draft Magazine and Thrillist.

7 Monks Taproom currently has two locations, its original Traverse City taproom and one in Boyne City that opened last year. The Traverse City location is also home to Low Bar, a cocktail bar.
