Meijer is set to open its first stores in the Upper Peninsula.

Meijer said last week it will open stores in Escanaba and Sault Ste. Marie on May 18.

The two stores are among the seven new stores Meijer expects to open in the Midwest this year.

The two U.P. superstores recently began receiving merchandise and training staff members.

The stores have accompanying gas stations, which are currently serving customers.

Meijer announced earlier this year it would invest more than $375 million in seven new stores and 22 remodel projects.

“These projects represent an investment in our customers, team members and the local communities that have supported us for so long,” Meijer CEO Rick Keyes said at the time.

Walker-based Meijer has more than 230 locations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
