A local brewery has been recognized for its international efforts.

The West Michigan World Trade Association honored Grand Rapid-based Founders Brewing Co. as its 2017 World Trader of the Year at a dinner on May 11.

The recognition was announced in conjunction with the 32nd annual World Trade Week.

“With so many West Michigan companies successfully participating in the global marketplace, the selection process this year was particularly difficult,” WMWTA President Kerri Orders said. “However, the steady distribution growth and recent international partnership with Mahou San Miguel made Founders impossible to ignore.”

Founders joins companies such as Steelcase, Meijer, X-Rite and Amway as winners of the World Trader of the Year award in West Michigan.

Founders was started in 1997 by Dave Engbers and Mike Stevens and a stake in the company was bought by Mahou in 2015. Mahou is a family-owned Spanish brewery founded in 1890.

“WMWTA is excited to watch as Founders Brewing Co.’s international distribution network continues to expand, shedding light on the emerging craft beer scene,” Orders said.
