A manufacturer will construct a new 25,000-square-foot production facility and headquarters in the region.

Kalamazoo-based Quality Precast, a maker of pre-cast concrete products, such as manholes and large-block retaining walls, said yesterday it will move from its current location and spend $2.8 million on the property purchase and building construction.

The manufacturer plans to break ground at the end of summer and finish the building by spring 2018.

Jeff Schierbeek, co-founder and president of Quality Precast, said the company plans to add 20 jobs over the next five years, including truck drivers, forklift operators, plant laborers and office staff.

He said it was time for the company, which has 12 employees, to move from its current building, at 3815 N. Westnedge Ave.

“We’re outgrowing this location. There’s no space here,” Schierbeek said.

The expansion will allow the company to move all production inside the new building and run 365 days per year.

The address of the new facility hasn’t been determined, but it will be located on Adobe Road in Alamo Township.

Sturgis-based James Ware Construction is the architect and contractor on the project.

Incentives

In support of the project, Quality Precast received a $3,000 grant approved by the Kalamazoo County Brownfield Authority to conduct a phase one environmental site assessment.

Alamo Township is also supporting the project with a 12-year tax abatement.

A Michigan Department of Transportation-certified supplier, Quality Precast was founded in 2004 by Jeff Schierbeek and Dan Schierbeek and now serves the Great Lakes region.
