The nation’s homebrewers think highly of two West Michigan breweries and their beers.

Bell’s Brewery and Founders Brewing Co. rank No. 1 and No. 2 on a ranking of top breweries by the American Homebrewers Association, or AHA, as voted by its members in the 15th-annual “Best Beers in America” survey.

Bell’s Two Hearted was also voted as the top-ranked beer, beating out Russian River Brewing Co.’s Pliny the Elder, a double IPA that had topped the ranking for eight years.

“The ‘Best Beers in America’ survey reveals which beers are leaving the biggest impression on the minds — and mouths — of these discerning beer drinkers,” said Gary Glass, director, American Homebrewers Association.

Bell’s and Founders both have two beers ranked in the top 10.

Bell’s Hopslam is ranked No. 5.

Founders Breakfast Stout is No. 3, with KBS tied for No. 6 with Heady Topper from The Alchemist.

Founders All Day IPA, which makes up more than 60 percent of its production, ranks No. 13, and Backwoods Bastard ranks No. 27.

New Holland Brewing’s Dragon’s Milk is tied for No. 47.
