A bilingual design firm won the first 5x5 Night that was conducted entirely in Spanish.

Jose Abreu’s Koren Graphic Design received $5,000 as the champion of Start Garden’s Cinco por Cinco last month. Abreu will also receive $5,000 worth of legal services from Varnum.

Abreu had run Koren Graphic Design on a part-time basis for several years, but after losing his corporate job at MC Sports following the company’s bankruptcy earlier this year, he decided to focus on growing his startup.

“I knew I needed to turn my focus completely to my Koren project, so when this competition was announced, I knew I had to put together my best pitch and go for it, and I’m glad I did,” Abreu said.

Koren Graphic Design provides logos, postcards, business cards, fliers and other services. The startup provides graphic design services in English and Spanish.

5x5 Night

Put on by Grand Rapids-based Start Garden, 5x5 Night is a monthly competition that pits five local entrepreneurs against each other, giving them each a chance to present their business idea in five minutes, using five slides as visual aids, to five judges, with the winner receiving $5,000 to use for their idea.

The next 5x5 Night will be held at 5 p.m. on July 25 at New Holland Brewing’s Knickerbocker Beer Garden in Grand Rapids, at 417 Bridge St. NW.
