A pair of local publishers have teamed up to print the 50th-anniversary edition of a bestselling Christian novel — marking the first venture in their new partnership.

Grand Rapids-based Kregel Publications has paired with the Grand Rapids-based startup Gilead Publishing to produce the edition of “Christy,” by Catherine Marshall, this fall.

The project is the inaugural joint release for the companies, whose partnership will continue with Kregel exclusively producing, marketing, distributing and selling the Gilead line of books.

"The agreement with Kregel allows us to focus on acquiring, developing and publishing great novels for fiction-readers, both Christians and those who want something to read that gives hope and encouragement," Gilead Publishing President and Publisher Dan Balow said. "We hope to be an example of how two companies can work together to accomplish something greater than either could separately."

Kregel, Inc. President and CEO Jerry Kregel said the company is “extremely pleased” to partner with Gilead Publishing, whose product line goes “hand-in-hand” with the titles Kregel looks to produce.

Gilead Publishing was founded in 2016 with a focus on publishing fiction through its three imprints: Gilead (core Christian fiction); Enclave (science fiction, fantasy and supernatural series); and Evergreen Farm (titles from authors Catherine Marshall and Peter Marshall).

“Christy” was released in 1967 and became a national bestseller by August of the next year. Kregel said Catherine Marshall’s book, originally published by McGraw Hill, has sold 10-million copies.
