A specialty grocer is planning its second West Michigan location.

California-based Trader Joe’s is heading to Kalamazoo, according to a post today by WWMT News Channel 3 in Kalamazoo. The retailer is expected to build a store at the intersection of Stadium Drive and S. Drake Road, next to a Costco.

The TV station cites a building permit submitted to the Southwest Michigan Building Authority.

Trader Joe’s first came to West Michigan when it signed a lease in December 2014 for its more than 12,000-square-foot location in Kentwood, at 3684 28th St. SE. The store opened its doors in September 2015.

Trader Joe’s has multiple stores in southeast Michigan: Ann Arbor, Bloomfield Hills, Grosse Pointe, Northville, Rochester Hills and Royal Oak.

Trader Joe’s carries a variety of store-brand foods and beverages, such as frozen entrees, deli items, bread, coffee beans, nuts, juices, beer and wine, as well as produce.

Update

The site plan for the retail project next to the Costco, the Corner Shoppes @ Drake, was approved in September 2016 by the Oshtemo Charter Township Planning Commission, with a planned 13,000-square-foot “natural grocery store.”

Oshtemo Charter Township responded today to a request by the Business Journal for any Trader Joe-related applications.

“As of right now, the property owner has not confirmed with the township that Trader Joe’s will indeed be the tenant at the property in question,” said Ben Clark, the township’s zoning administrator and GIS specialist. “I understand the building permit application that’s been submitted to the Southwest Michigan Building Authority indicates that particular operator is coming to town.”
