A pair of creative types have launched a new marketing agency in the region.

Tim Hackney and Rich Evenhouse left the Holland-based marketing agency The Image Group to open a firm this summer called Next Marketing + Design in downtown Holland, at 76 E. 8th St.

Hackney and Evenhouse have a total of 40 years of experience in the writing, marketing and design businesses. They started the agency to help clients address “what is next,” in addition to “what is now.”

They define “what is now” as finding the right tone in writing, design and production to help their clients tell a story. “What is next” means working with clients to reach the right audiences for their messages.

“We live by the mantra, ‘Great at what’s now, ready for what’s next,’” Hackney said.  “We’re storytellers.”

Evenhouse said this venture has been a leap for him.

“Starting a creative company is unlike anything I’ve ever done before,” Evenhouse said. “It’s intimidating, it’s exhilarating, it’s totally new to me, and yet, I feel like it’s what I was supposed to be doing my entire career.”

Hackney has been a writer, strategic planner and storyteller for two decades. He has worked for national brands at the Chicago offices of Young & Rubicam, BBDO and JWT.

From 2006 to 2014, he worked at Fairly Painless Advertising in Grand Rapids, and from 2014 up until founding Next, he was creative director for The Image Group.

Hackney earned a B.A. in art and graphic design at Calvin College in 1996.

Evenhouse has worked in web design and development for more than 20 years, focusing on video production and business management for the past decade.

Before launching Next, he was a graphic designer at Informability in Chicago from 1997 to 1998, and he worked at The Image Group from 1998 to April 2017, most recently as president and digital director.

He is a board member of the Holland Area Arts Council and a board member and co-owner of Caribou Services of West Michigan, a Muskegon-based portable toilet, septic system and plumbing company owned by his family for 35 years.

Evenhouse earned a B.F.A. in photography from Calvin College in 1996.

Besides Hackney and Evenhouse, the Next team includes Amber Gray, account manager, Katy Johnson, copywriter and content manager, and Aaron McCall, designer and art director.

Next’s client list include various organizations: Alpenrose, Barrone Auto Wash, Blue Ridge, Connected, Cornerstone University, EverKept, Greenhut Galleries, Heritage Community of Kalamazoo, Metro Health Hospital Foundation, Montecito Beach Village, Saginaw Valley State University, Spring Lake Public Schools, Transmatic and Tulip Time.

Next Marketing + Design offers a range of services: writing and design for traditional and digital media; TV, video and radio production; web, social and digital advertising; and logo, packaging and identity development.
