College installs new artificial turf on soccer field
A college has installed a new synthetic turf on the field in its 1,400-seat soccer stadium.
Greg Maybury, director of operations at Hope College’s Physical Plant, said the college spent $700,000 to install the AstroTurf DT32 artificial terrain in its Division III Van Andel Soccer Stadium, which opened in 2009.
Installation began at the end of May and took about three weeks to complete, he said.
Maybury said Hope plans to use the turf for soccer, lacrosse and intramural sports.
“The Van Andel Soccer Stadium had artificial turf (ProGrass) when it opened,” he said. “Our previous soccer field was natural turf and located south of the current field."
Maybury said the college’s coaches chose the AstroTurf DT32 for its “playability.”
The ProPlay pad under the turf is designed to absorb shock, according to AstroTurf. The DT32 product, part of AstroTurf’s Green Series, uses an organic mineral infill called ZeoFill, in lieu of the traditional sand and crumb-rubber infill, which was known to give off a “tire-store rubber” odor.
Combined with high-density fibers and AstroTurf’s patented RootZone layer, the product is designed to hold up to constant use, lower surface temperatures and require less maintenance than previous iterations.
Rich Jordan, AstroTurf VP of architectural sales, said Hope College is the first organization in Michigan to install the DT32 surface.
“We are thrilled to be a part of the Hope community,” he said.
Representatives from Hope’s physical plant, grounds and athletics were on the project team.
GMB Architects assisted with the RFP specifications.
The college funded the project through its amortization fund from the operating budget and its internal capital budget.
