A new brewery and its partner homebrewer won the inaugural Beer City Pro-Am.

City Built Brewing Co. and Paul Arends won the Beer City Pro-Am Cup last week, which will be on display at the brewery in Grand Rapids, at 820 Monroe Ave. NW.

Twenty area breweries took part in the event, the brainchild of Grand Rapids homebrewers Nick Rodammer and Jeremy Gavin.

The Beer City Brewers Guild helped organize the event.

Together, Arends and City Built Co-owner Dave Petroelje brewed Monroe Weiss, a tropical Berliner weiss-style beer. Monroe Weiss is a light, tart wheat beer with passion fruit, guava, mango and grapefruit.

The trophy will be etched with the winners’ names and passed on in future years of the competition.

"Many people don't realize just how talented the area's best homebrewers are, and this event is a great forum to showcase the level of creativity and skill the homebrewing community has to offer," Rodammer said when the event was announced.

"That 20 different local breweries would so willingly commit to this event in such a short period of time speaks volumes about the craft beer community we have in Beer City."
