A trial attorney has joined a local law firm as a shareholder on its litigation team.

Rhoades McKee said last week that it welcomed attorney Ian Northon to the position.

In his practice, Northon defends entrepreneurs and their companies in employment matters, including executive terminations, trade-secret injunctions and non-compete cases. He also helps clients navigate business disputes.

“Employers in West Michigan are known for working hard and playing by the rules,” Northon said. “I get to help ensure that these companies get a fair shake at trial and use all my skills at avoiding costly litigation in the first place or winning once things escalate.”

Northon’s background

Rhodes McKee said Northon has won more than a dozen civil trials, conducted numerous internal investigations for employers, defended pension and health care plans, and protected companies from harassment and discrimination claims.

He has represented victims of fraud, embezzlement and financial schemes, including trusts, the elderly, individuals, charities and tax-exempt entities. He also has experience in collective bargaining for industrial, municipal, health care and energy employers.

Northon has secured zero verdicts and dismissals for defendant employers and obtained "multiple seven-figure trial wins" for fraud victims and creditors.

The firm said he has defended "the largest global brewer" against picketing threats at Super Bowl XL and helped protect "the world’s largest retailer" against corporate campaigns and an employee hunger strike.

He also brings strategic planning insights to his clients after serving as in-house counsel and senior staff at a law school.

Northon is licensed to practice in Florida, Pennsylvania and Michigan, as well as several federal court jurisdictions.

He is a member of the Digital Currency and Ledger Defense Coalition, a Young Leader of the American-Swiss Foundation and a member of the Catholic Lawyers Guild and the Federalist Society.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Hillsdale College in 2000 and a J.D. from the Ave Maria School of Law in 2004.
