Change Ups: Bishop recognized as next generation wealth advisor

Forbes recognized Bob Bishop, financial advisor and senior vice president of investments, of Wells Fargo Advisors in Holland, as one of America’s Top Next-Generation Wealth Advisors. Bishop has 14 years of experience in the financial services industry. He said he enjoys the ongoing challenge of helping his clients succeed financially. Bishop holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Grand Valley State University and resides in Zeeland with his wife, Karrie, and two children, Logan and Madelyn.

ARTS

The Grand Rapids Art Museum announced it will premiere Jan. 27 a solo exhibition of new work by New York-based artist Alexis Rockman that examines the past, present and future of the Great Lakes, based on Rockman’s extensive research, travel within the region and conversations with environmental scientists, historians and Great Lakes specialists. The exhibit will run through April 29.

Grand Rapids Ballet announced the following new officers: president, Michael Kling; vice president, Anda Vizulis; treasurer, Dana Baldwin; secretary, Leah Voigt; development chair, Ian Hunter; and at-large, Theresa Devries. The Grand Rapids Public Museum in partnership with Kent Records Management Inc. will digitize more than 1,500 rare and out-of-print furniture catalogs that document Grand Rapids’ history in the furniture industry. The project is made possible through Furniture Manufacturers Heritage Advised Fund and Grand Rapids Community Foundation grants. The project is expected to be completed by year’s end.

The Muskegon Museum of Art’s exhibition “Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian” has drawn over 15,000 visitors from 44 states across the U.S., District of Columbia and from 18 other countries in the 12 weeks since its May 11 opening. Attendance numbers are the largest of any exhibition held at the small Midwestern art museum and are up over 300 percent from a similar period last year. New memberships and gift shop sales are both up about 50 percent over last year as well.

Patrick H. Flannery was appointed to Coldwater-based Southern Michigan Bancorp Inc.’s board of directors. Flannery is a licensed CPA and vice president for finance and treasurer at Hillsdale College.

AWARDS

Allegra Marketing · Print · Mail graphic designer and certified mail design professional Brittany Schmeltzer took first place and $1,500 in prize money in the international calendar design competition sponsored by franchise network Alliance Franchise Brands. Her design will be available to nearly 200 franchise network centers across North America that print and distribute calendars to clients and vendor partners in their respective markets.

Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce’s Center for Community Leadership honored Juan Olivarez, former president of Aquinas College, with the Distinguished Community Trustee Award for his continuous accomplishments within the Grand Rapids community. Inner City Christian Federation is the recipient of the Uncommon Greatness Award and Plaza Roosevelt received the Create Great Collaboration for their dedication to improving the Grand Rapids community through their leadership and involvement.

The Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce announced Priority Health President and CEO Joan Budden is the recipient of the 2017 ATHENA Award.

Helen Zeerip, president of Holland-based Teddy’s Transport and the founder of Grant Me Hope, was chosen as Sen. Gary Peters’ Angels in Adoption honoree for 2017. Zeerip and other honorees will be recognized in September in Washington, D.C., for their work promoting adoption. Zeerip has been a foster mother for 16 years in Allegan County who ultimately adopted two of those children.

The first iChallengeU state competition that pairs students with a business or organization announced a team from northeastern Ottawa County, which was paired with Grand Haven Township Fire/Rescue Department, took second place for addressing the challenge: What ambulance service model will provide the best care for our community? Grand Haven Township team members were Kate Criswell, Elizabeth Egerer, Carlos Rappleye and Chloe Weigel from Grand Haven High School, and William Easterly, Samual Negen and Emily Sievertsen from Spring Lake High School.

Muskegon-based Baker College System’s business education programs have received reaffirmation of accreditation from the International Accreditation Council for Business Education through July 31, 2023.

GRANTS

The Ottawa County Water Resource Commissioner’s Office was awarded $600,000 from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality’s Nonpoint Source Pollution Control Grants Program to reduce nonpoint source pollution within the upper Sand Creek watershed, located in Wright and Chester townships in northeast Ottawa County. Nonpoint source pollution is caused when rain, snowmelt or wind carry pollutants off the land and into lakes, streams, wetlands and other water bodies.

USA Financial Exchange in Ada added Horizon Investments and Flexible Plan Investments to its list of asset managers on its turnkey asset management program. 

GOVERNMENT

Kent County commissioners Emily Brieve, Stan Ponstein and Robert Womack joined more than 50 county commissioners from across Michigan at a recent White House Conference to discuss greater cooperation between local and federal leaders. The commissioners were invited by the Trump administration to share their views on public policy challenges facing local governments.

The Wyoming Department of Public Safety announced Fire Lieutenant Dennis VanTassell and firefighter Bradley Dornbos have successfully completed the process that awards them the professional designation of Chief Training Officer. They become two of only 104 CTOs nationwide.

Grand Rapids-based Fox Motors announced it acquired Fox Ann Arbor, formerly known as Ann Arbor Automotive, the first Fox Motors entry in the Ann Arbor market. It will feature the Acura, Hyundai and Nissan lines. Fox Ann Arbor is comprised of three separate dealerships, Fox Ann Arbor Acura, 540 Auto Mall Drive, and Fox Ann Arbor Hyundai and Fox Ann Arbor Nissan, 3975 Jackson Road.

TECHNOLOGY

OST was awarded a contract from the city of Grand Rapids to create monitoring devices that will evaluate the quality of air in various locations. The pilot program is in partnership with Start Garden and Seamless.

X-Rite Inc. and subsidiary Pantone LLC announced the launch of MetaVue, a noncontact imaging spectrophotometer for retail paint matching. MetaVue provides paint associates the ability to easily respond to a range of different types of customer samples and accurately measure them, all intended to build confidence behind the paint counter and increase customer loyalty.
