A Fortune 500 insurance company is planning to expand its Grand Rapids tech center and add 60 jobs at the site.

Lansing-based Auto-Owners Insurance will invest $897,900 to recruit and train 60 new employees and expand its footprint at its Grand Rapids operations and training center, at 3949 Sparks Dr. SE, according to The Right Place yesterday.

Currently, Auto-Owners occupies 5,952 square feet at the location, which opened in August 2016.

“Auto-Owners Insurance has grown tremendously in the past year, and we expect that upward trend to continue for several years, so it’s imperative that our Grand Rapids technology center grow with the demand,” said Jim Schumacher, SVP of IT, Auto-Owners Insurance.

The Right Place said Auto-Owners chose to expand in West Michigan over an out-of-state site, due to the region’s strong pipeline of IT professionals and proximity to its Lansing headquarters.

As such, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation has approved a $315,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant for the company.

The Right Place, a Grand Rapids-based economic development agency, assisted Auto-Owners Insurance in exploring its in-state expansion options over out-of-state possibilities.

“We’ve outgrown the space already,” Schumacher said. “We knew there would be a time to explore growing our tech center operations, so we’re appreciative of The Right Place assisting us in pursuing the most-effective option.”
