A telecom company has installed 310 new outdoor Wi-Fi hotspots in the downtown area.

Comcast said this month it installed the new Xfinity hotspots, resulting in more than 570 Xfinity hotspots in and around downtown Grand Rapids.

The growing network of outdoor, business and home networks allows Xfinity internet customers to connect their devices at no additional charge, while non-customers are offered two free sessions per month.

“This is great news for those who live, work and play in our city,” Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss said. “I am especially pleased about these additional hotspots, as we work to activate our amazing parks and promote all the great outdoor activities and events that Grand Rapids offers."

Most Xfinity internet customers can access the hotspots by selecting “xfinitywifi” from the list of available networks on their devices and entering their Comcast email and password. The Xfinity Wi-Fi app, available for download on both iOS and Android devices, helps people locate business and outdoor hotspots. People can also look for the hotspots online.

“Immediate and hassle-free access to the internet while on the go is extremely important today,” said Tim Collins, regional VP, Comcast Michigan.
