A local medical firm is now the majority owner of a surgical center in the area.

Grand Rapids-based Great Lakes Management Services Organization said this week it added the Walker Surgical Center to its group of service locations.

The Walker Surgical Center, at 3300 Walker View Dr. in Walker, was founded in 2007 as the result of a collaboration among doctors from four organizations: Food and Ankle Specialists of West Michigan; Grand Rapids Ophthalmology; Grand Rapids Vein Clinic; and Orthopedic Associates of West Michigan.

Each of the founding organizations still has part ownership and still provides services out of the center, but Great Lakes MSO now owns more than 50 percent.

Great Lakes MSO’s new ownership allows the organization to fulfill its growth-based model, while allowing the four founding organizations to still have part ownership, so the partnership works in everyone’s favor, said Bob Wolford, executive director of Grand Rapids Ophthalmology, which is managed by Great Lakes MSO.

Wolford said the deal is “just part of the vision we have for the future.”

"My partners and I welcome this new relationship with Great Lakes MSO to assist us in providing the highest level of care to our patients," said Dr. Patrick Meyer of Foot and Ankle Specialists and Walker Surgical Center’s medical director.

The center is 18,000 square feet, with about 3,000 square feet of undeveloped space.

There are three operating rooms on the premises, and Wolford said the team plans to apply next year for a fourth.

The center serves pediatric patients and adults and provides eye, plastic, hand, and upper- and lower-extremity surgical procedures.

Various practitioners perform procedures at the center: nine board-certified foot and ankle surgeons; six board-certified orthopedic and plastic surgeons who perform hand, upper- and lower-extremity surgical procedures; seven ophthalmic surgeons who perform procedures such as oculoplastics, eye muscle and glaucoma surgery; and one credentialed specialist performing vein surgery.

Dan Reeder has been the administrative director of the facility since it opened.

The center employs a total of 40 full-time and part-time staff.

Walker Surgical Center is fully accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is fully licensed by the State of Michigan.

Great Lakes MSO

Great Lakes Management Services Organization was formed in 2017 by Sterling Partners, a private equity firm, as a practice management services organization.

It manages Grand Rapids Ophthalmology and its related retail optical and surgical facility businesses, including Lakeshore Eye in East Grand Rapids and Walker Surgical Center in Walker.
