Bagel shop opens dine-in space

A bagel bakery in town has added a dining room — serving coffee, bagels and other artisan menu items.

Lisa Barhydt and René Pascal Kalter co-founded GR Bagel in 2012, producing baked goods out of the Uptown Kitchen food incubator in Eastown, at 423 Norwood Ave. SE, and selling them wholesale at the Fulton Street Farmers Market.

They purchased Uptown Kitchen from Kelly LeCoy in 2014 to use it as a home base for retail operations.

That year, the pair added a 1,700-square-foot kitchen and office for takeout sales. Sip Juice Bar was at the time renting the large room adjacent to GR Bagel’s kitchen.

In May, Sip Juice Bar closed, and Barhydt and Pascal Kalter added the 1,400 square feet it formerly occupied to GR Bagel’s lease.

In October, the co-owners completed renovations to their space, which is behind Wolfgang’s Restaurant, and re-named it GR Bagel Espresso & Bagel Bar.

Patrons may now order from the counter and eat their food on-site.

“Our staff has been with us for a long time, and the Eastown community has embraced us,” Barhydt said. “This project is a culmination of 20 years of working, planning and dreaming.”

Barhydt and Pascal Kalter worked with the existing layout of the space during the renovation process.

“We added custom Michigan reclaimed wood countertops, a long bar and wood tables from Tontin Lumber, installed an espresso machine and refined our menu,” Barhydt said. “The space is bright and modern, with fun artwork and jazz music.”

GR Bagel Espresso & Bagel Bar employs two part-time workers and is looking to hire a full-time barista.

Menu

The shop now offers a full espresso bar, artisan tea, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, bagels, hand-cured gravlax — a Nordic dish of raw salmon cured in salt with dill and sugar— handmade cream cheese and handmade cream scones.

Barhydt said the ingredients are locally sourced and organic whenever possible.

Hours

GR Bagel Espresso & Bagel Bar is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The business plans to begin offering self-serve Sunday brunch after the new year.

Retail and catering

GR Bagel products are sold at the Plainfield Avenue Kingma’s Market, Lantern Coffee Bar & Lounge, The Sparrows Coffee, Tea & Newsstand on Wealthy Street and the Fulton Street Farmers Market.

The bakery also offers delivery for corporate events.
