A new surface parking lot has added about 300 parking spaces to downtown Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids-based Spectrum Industries said today it partnered with the City of Grand Rapids and the city’s Mobile GR and the Parking Services departments to open the $2-million parking lot at the cross section of McConnell Street and Ionia Avenue, across from the Downtown Market.

The site, owned by Spectrum Industries, previously sat as a vacant lot for more than 20 years.

Spectrum Decorative Finishes, a wholly owned subsidiary of Spectrum Industries, was established on McConnell Street in 1996. The company is a maker of functional and decorative finishes for auto components.

“We are thrilled that we can partner with the city to activate this vacant property and continue the momentum in the Heartside district and the Downtown Market,” said Kevin Bassett, president, Spectrum Industries.

The transformation into a new parking lot aims to expand parking availability for visitors, local businesses and residents with daily and monthly parking options.

"The opening of this lot is significant, as we work together as a community to meet the parking needs of our downtown businesses and their employees as well as residents and visitors,” Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss said.

“This is another great example of the strong public-private partnerships that we have in our community, and we are grateful to Spectrum Industries for teaming with the city on this project.”

Work on the roughly 108,900-square-foot lot began in August and was completed this month. The excavating firm Kamminga & Roodvoets worked on the project.

Lot permits are available for $86 per month or at a rate of $1.25 per half hour with a daily max of $12.

The lot is located within access of the free Dash West bus and the Fare Free Zone of the Silverline bus route.
