A local accounting company has acquired a firm in the region.

Grand Rapids-based Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors said today it acquired St. Joseph-based Gerbel & Company P.C., an accounting firm founded in 1968 that provides tax, auditing and advisory services.

Gerbel & Company will become part of Hungerford Nichols on Jan. 1.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition expands the team at Hungerford Nichols to 90 people at offices in Grand Rapids, Greenville and now St. Joseph.

“Hungerford Nichols identified the need to expand throughout West Michigan to better serve our clients,” said Tom Prince, CPA and shareholder, Hungerford Nichols. “When we met the team at Gerbel, their focus on excellent service, integrity and community involvement brought them to the top of our merger list.”

Gerbel & Company Founder Robert Gerbel, along with his nine employees, will be retained and continue to serve clients out of the St. Joseph office, at 830 Pleasant St.

Prince and Gerbel said the deal will not impact day-to-day operations in St. Joseph.

“I cannot thank our clients enough for their past and continued support and business,” Gerbel said. “Our focus continues to be on providing the best service for businesses and their families. Our clients will continue to work with the same fantastic team they’ve come to depend on, including Brian Wisneski, Marcia Graham and me.”
