A senior living community has organized 14 free classes for the winter months.

Samaritas Senior Living has posted a new lineup of classes for its program, The Academy.

Open to the public, the classes are about a variety of subjects and take place January through March at different Samaritas venues in Grand Rapids.

A variety of classes make up the winter Academy schedule: History + Art; Benefits of Plant-Based Diets; Intro to Sign Language; Personal Care Products Workshop; Acrylic Painting; Learn to Cook Soups and Stocks; The Life of Young Gerald R. Ford; Basics of Interior Design; Become a Dementia Friend; Essential Oils Workshop; Learn about Grand Rapids’ Most Influential Women; Astronomy 101; The ABS’s of Self Defense; and How to Pair Beer.

The Academy started in April 2016. Since then, 65 Academy classes have been held, with more than 1,500 attendees.

Teachers include center residents, staff, community members, business owners and college professors.

“We have learned so much, made friends and most of all, had fun,” said Deedre Vriesman, executive director, Samaritas Senior Living. “The Academy has brought people together to learn and grow.”
