Editor's note: The number of "top-performing" homes in West Michigan has been updated and corrected, from five to 13.

Thirteen West Michigan nursing homes have been rated among the top providers in the country.

They have earned five-star ratings from U.S. News & World Report, landing "top-performing" spots on its ranking of “Best Nursing Homes” for 2017-18.

U.S. News analysts evaluated more than 15,000 nursing homes nationwide, and 15 percent (about 2,300) were identified as a “best nursing home” or “top-performing” provider.

The rankings are designed to help people make informed health care decisions.

"Finding a nursing home that meets an individual's specific needs is a difficult decision that several million families across America face each year," said Brian Kelly, editor and chief content officer, U.S. News.

"The ‘Best Nursing Homes’ ratings, advice and tools were designed to help navigate this important life decision and make the process a little easier."

Methodology

Since 2009, U.S. News has relied on data from Nursing Home Compare, a program run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, to develop its annual nursing home ratings report.

To qualify as a “Best Nursing Home,” facilities had to earn an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 during 10 months of federal reports ending in August 2017 and consistently meet performance standards set by U.S. News, such as earning at least a 4 in the CMS overall rating for all 10 months.

Nursing Home Finder

The U.S. News also released Nursing Home Finder, which offers information about care, safety, health inspections, staffing and more for nearly every nursing home in the country.

The tool allows individuals to conduct customized searches for a highly rated nursing home by location, distance, Medicare and Medicaid coverage and size.
