A drug maker’s foundation has donated $260,000 to two organizations in the region.

The Perrigo Company Charitable Foundation donated $130,000 each toward a new splash pad in the Downtown Riverfront Park in Allegan and to the Allegan District Library.

The new splash pad, an outdoor recreation area that often includes sprinklers, fountains and other structures that spray water, is meant to offer a free place for kids and families to play.

The Perrigo Splash Pad will feature LED lights and a view of the downtown waterfront.

“As we transform Downtown Riverfront Park into our community’s gathering place, it is fitting that Perrigo is at the center of that effort,” Allegan City Manager Joel Dye said. “The Company and its employees have long been a champion of Allegan’s efforts to build a thriving community. Their financial support of the Perrigo Splash Pad will allow the city to focus funds on other areas of the park’s renovation.”

There will be a groundbreaking for the Perrigo Splash Pad in a few months, with the goal of opening in June.

The library donation will fund the Perrigo Learning Lab for children and the Perrigo STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, Math) Lab for teens.

Each area of the STREAM Lab will encourage creative thinking through interactive activities and technology.

“This generous gift means the Perrigo Learning Lab and Perrigo STREAM Lab will be highlights of the remodeled library and will serve as a welcoming place for youth for years to come, “said Ryan Deery, director, Allegan District Library. “The Learning Lab will incorporate the natural landscape of Allegan and the Kalamazoo River to reinforce how our environment can enhance health and well-being, while we envision the STREAM Lab serving as a positive place for teens to gather, study, learn and be inspired.”

Work on the Perrigo Learning Lab and Perrigo STREAM Lab is expected to begin soon and is part of a $6.5-million library expansion project.

The two Perrigo labs are expected to be completed in January 2019.
