A hospital in the region will begin a $35-million expansion next month.

There will be a 32,000-foot expansion to the surgical suites at Ascension’s Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, at 1521 Gull Rd.

The project, expected to be finished by 2020, will add another floor to the Stryker Center, which was built to allow for vertical expansion.

The addition will allow for larger operating rooms, which will provide space for current and future technologies.

In addition, two new operating rooms will be added to the birthing center floor.

The new surgical floor will connect to the patient units by a new connecting bridge. There will also be two additional elevators added to facilitate service for patients and staff.

“This project is an important step forward as we continue to grow to meet the needs of our community,” said Kathy Young, president and CEO, Borgess Health. “We have been expanding our surgical services for years. We have finally reached the point where new construction is the only answer.”

Dr. Robert Hill, chief medical officer at Borgess, said the expansion will accommodate increased procedures.

“Our surgical cases have been increasing in cardiovascular services, orthopedic procedures, vascular work and bariatric surgeries,” Hill said. “This expansion will provide much-needed space for our physicians and will provide greater convenience, privacy and comfort for our patients.”

While some services will be relocated, patients will not experience disruption in care during construction.
