A furniture retailer has opened its first West Michigan location.

Ashley HomeStore moved into the old MC Sports building at 3160 28th St. SE in Grand Rapids, across from Woodland Mall, last month. MC Sports closed in 2017 after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The 27,000-square-foot building underwent a complete renovation, with new walls and flooring, totaling more than $2 million.

Grand Rapids-based Visser Brothers was contracted for the build out.

Brett Johnson, regional director for southwest Michigan at Ashley HomeStore, said the response from the city and consumers has been phenomenal.

He said the owners, Ben Monnin and David Monnin, had been looking at the West Michigan market for almost two years.

Johnson said the growth of the Grand Rapids market and 28th Street’s status as a major retail corridor made the site a logical placement for the chain’s first store in West Michigan.

Ashley HomeStore may have plans for further growth in the southern and northern sections of Kent County. Johnson estimated the market may have room for four to six stores.

The chain has six other locations in Michigan.
