A college in the region has named its next president.

Luther Marshall Washington was named Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s third president at a special board of trustees meeting earlier this month.

Washington was chosen from a field of more than two dozen candidates.

He will succeed Marilyn Schlack, who has served as president of the college since 1982.

The college said the board and Washington need to agree on final contract details, which include compensation and an official start date. The contract will be formally approved at a future board meeting.

Most recently, Washington has been the president of New River Community and Technical College in Beckley, West Virginia for the past five years.

Previously, he was a campus VP for Harrisburg Area Community College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

He worked in various positions for KVCC from 1998 to 2010, including VP of student services.

He holds a Ph.D. in higher education from University of Nebraska – Lincoln, a master’s degree in elementary education from Winona State University and an bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Ohio Wesleyan University.
