Furniture maker partners on breastfeeding suite
A local furniture maker has collaborated on a “compact lactation suite” for nursing moms in the workplace.
Burlington, Vermont-based Mamava — a maker of lactation accommodations founded by two mothers — said last week it launched The Mamava Mini by Steelcase, resulting from a design collaboration with Grand Rapids-based Steelcase.
“We are excited to partner with a human-centered and mission-based organization such as Mamava to bring this new design to market,” said Michael Klaus, lounge category manager, Steelcase.
Mamava describes The Mamava Mini as an “affordable, easy-to-install” private breastfeeding or breast-pumping station for moms to use in the workplace.
“As design professionals and mothers who pumped in the workplace, we channeled this insight into key product features that meet the challenges women face in the office environment,” said Sascha Mayer, co-founder and CEO, Mamava.
The Mamava Mini is designed for individual use and creates “a comfortable and private setting” for mothers to breastfeed or pump.
Its seating “cradles the body,” allowing the upper and lower back to be supported, and it features a 360-degree privacy screen with an interior lock and an “enhanced privacy sleeve.”
The Mamava Mini also allows the user to work while she pumps or nurses via an angled surface with built-in arm support and lighting.
The Mamava Mini is listed at $8,500 retail, including shipping and delivery.
It will be sold by Mamava and distributed by various Steelcase dealers depending on location.
Founded in 1912, Steelcase (NYSE: SCS) offers a portfolio of architectural, furniture and technology products and services designed to “unlock human promise and support social, economic and environmental sustainability.”
Steelcase sells through its family of brands: Steelcase, Coalesse, Designtex, PolyVision, Turnstone and AMQ.
The global manufacturer has more than 800 dealer locations and reported fiscal 2017 revenue of $3 billion.
Founded in 2013 by Christine Dodson and Sascha Mayer, Mamava designs analog and digital solutions for breastfeeding moms on the go.
In addition to its lounge products, the company makes a free app for iOS and Android users that helps moms find pumping- and breastfeeding-friendly locations.
Mamava, which is a B Corp., makes all of its products in the U.S.
