A local cocktail bar is getting a more casual focus with a new owner.

Flat Lander’s in Grand Rapids, at 855 Michigan St. NE, has re-opened as Maggie’s.

Owner Maggie Thompson took over from previous owner, Fred Mackraz, on April 1.

Mackraz owned three bars at the time before deciding to sell Flat Lander’s.

“Running three bars, you don’t have a lot of time at home,” Thompson said.

Thompson said she would remove some of the high-end liquor and focus on carrying more beer to complement the income of the area.

“I want this to be a place where anyone can come in and have a drink,” she said.

Thompson said the food menu will feature burgers from Grand Butchers next door and oven-made nachos, as well as sauces made in-house.

Additional plans for the bar include adding more TVs and seats. The venue currently has the capacity to seat 48 guests, but Thompson said she could fit more.

Thompson carried over two bartenders from Flat Lander’s and hopes to hire more cooks in the future. She said she’s focusing on fine-tuning her staff and will not have a grand opening for the new venue.

“I wanted to build a relationship with my bartenders, so we’re not stumbling into each other when it gets busy,” she said.
