An Italian-style coffee bar inside a downtown condo building is closing and plans to relocate.

Passerella — which specializes in espresso drinks, paninis and soups inside the Boardwalk Condominiums building in Grand Rapids, at 940 Monroe Ave. NW — says in a Facebook post shared last week it plans to close this Friday.

The café opened eight months ago and had been on a month-to-month lease with the landlord, Grand Rapids-based Parkland Properties of Michigan.

Owner-chef Laurel Deruda says in the Facebook post the lease had “run its course.”

“Because of limitations within the space itself, we are seeking residence elsewhere, where we can produce more and varied options and hopefully, deliver them to you, wherever you are in the Grand Rapids area,” Deruda says in the post.

She has not yet located a space but indicated her team of three baristas would be joining her once a lease is signed.

“We have made so many great friends and learned valuable lessons in our eight months at the Boardwalk Building and look forward to serving you in our future endeavors, wherever that takes us,” Deruda says.
