A West Michigan appliance and electronics retailer plans to nearly double the size of its distribution center.

Bekins said today it has begun construction on a 30,000-square-foot addition to its 36,000-square-foot service center and warehouse at 590 O’Malley Dr. in Coopersville.

The facility was built in 2015 to provide warehouse and office space for the company.

Bekins sells, installs and repairs appliances and electronics. It has showrooms at 735 Washington Ave. in Grand Haven and 6275 28th St. SE in Grand Rapids.

“We always have been and always will be a service company that happens to sell products,” said Scott Bekins, owner and president, Bekins. “People can buy what we sell elsewhere, but you can’t get our service anywhere else. That’s why we continue to grow — better service, same price. We can only do that by being smarter and more efficient. The operations center in Coopersville and our amazing people allow us to do just that.”

Bekins employs about 100 people across its three locations. The company said it has nearly tripled its staff since 2010.

The Coopersville distribution center houses administrative, customer service, product service and repair, shipping and receiving, appliance installation, electronic integration, purchasing and operations employees.

After the expansion is complete, the company expects to double the workforce employed at the Coopersville location. A company spokesman did not disclose the number of jobs that would be created.

Firms on the project

Grand Rapids-based Tailored Building Systems is the project’s contractor. The architect was not disclosed.

Zeeland-based Lakeshore Advantage, the economic development agency for Ottawa County, worked with Bekins to help secure local support for the company’s growth.
