A family owned market is saying “ciao” to downtown Grand Rapids.

Russo’s International Market announced over Facebook this afternoon it is closing its downtown market, at 241 Fulton St. W, on May 31.

“We enjoyed being downtown, but we’re just going to concentrate our efforts back to our 29th Street location,” said Kelley Russo, the company’s head of marketing.

She hinted the company may return in the future.

Russo’s downtown market opened last September in a former Bagger Dave’s location.

Although it is smaller than the 29th Street store, the downtown location features a 60-seat restaurant with a 40-seat patio.

The market is offering 20 percent off all wine, beer and grocery items at the location until closing.

Russo’s International Market was founded in 1905 by Giovanni Battista Russo.

The company is in its fourth generation of Russo family leadership.
