Get your hands dirty

"Jump into the middle of things, get your hands dirty, fall flat on your face and then reach for the stars." -Ben Stein

Recently, I was at breakfast with our current apprentice, and he was sharing some disdain for cleaning toilets during his day job in our property management business. I think we can all agree that cleaning toilets is a dirty job, so we immediately had a shared understanding of that experience.

Our leadership apprentice program closely follows my entrepreneurial journey, and I started out by working for a property management business too. Needless to say, I’ve cleaned my fair share of toilets! In some ways, I still am.

I quickly interrupted him and shared all of the "toilets I had cleaned" that week. I then went on to share all of the toilets I knew of that had been cleaned by some very successful people I knew.

Often times, we entrepreneurs live with this utopian belief that one day we will wake up and everything will run just perfectly — no more dirty toilets.

As an entrepreneur and born optimist, I am here to remind you that the relationships we screw up, the broken accounting systems and the constant wrong turns are just disguises for dirty toilets. Never stop getting your hands dirty!

Inward. Onward. Upward!
