He did his Christmas shopping downtown — and tonight he’ll have a memorable New Year’s Eve because of that.

Zach Pilczuk won a night’s stay at the Amway Grand Plaza on New Year’s Eve, along with dinner and his choice of entertainment, as he was chosen in a random drawing as the grand prize winner in a holiday shopping promotion.

The promotion, called Give the Gift of Downtown, ran from Nov. 30 to Dec. 24 and involved about 20 downtown merchants and restaurants. People who spent at least $100 downtown during that period were eligible to enter the drawing.

Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. sponsored the promotion to encourage shopping downtown, and the Amway Grand Plaza donated the grand prize.

“When I heard of this promotion, I was eager to have the Amway Grand Plaza hotel become a sponsor of the prize package,” said Rick Winn, Amway Hotel Corp. president and board member of the Downtown Development Authority. “The hotel is supportive of and, in turn, is supported by the local community."

Winn added that Amway Grand Plaza is “happy to spread the message of the vibrancy of our downtown, and we want to thank the people who came downtown to shop.”

DGRI President and CEO Kristopher Larson said Give the Gift of Downtown was the first effort of its kind for his organization, but it likely won’t be the last.

“We want to continue to thank people who think of downtown as a great place to find unique and memorable gifts during the holidays and throughout the year,” Larson said.

In addition to the DDA, DGRI also includes the Downtown Improvement District, the city’s Office of Special Events and the Monroe North Tax Increment Finance Authority.
