Retailer produces 'Very Merry' campaign

A local retailer has brightened more than 230 holidays.

For the third year, Meijer hosted its “Very Merry Meijer” campaign on Dec. 10 and randomly selected a customer in all of its 230 stores throughout the Midwest — to purchase their entire cart of items and gift them a $100 Meijer gift card.

Each customer also received a second $100 Meijer gift card. 

Meijer gifted tens of thousands of dollars on the day, with carts ranging from $400 to more than $1,000.

"Christmas is a time for kindness and joy, and we were so excited to bring back the ‘Very Merry Meijer’ event once again to share the spirit of the season with those we hold dear: our customers and team members," said Hank Meijer, executive chairman, Meijer. "We are very appreciative of our customers and team members and wanted to find a special way to wish them a very Merry Christmas."

Hank Meijer, Board Director Doug Meijer and President and CEO Rick Keyes joined store directors on the day.

Meijer also released a video of the surprised customers.

"The ‘Very Merry Meijer’ event was an extra special way to show our appreciation and make the season bright,” Keyes said. “That is what the holidays are all about."

The 230 customers are also encouraged to post “pay-it-forward” photos and videos from the second gift card on the Meijer Facebook page and with the hashtag #VeryMerryMeijer. A winner will be selected for a $5,000 donation to a selected charity.

"This is truly an event I look forward to all year long, because it gives us a chance to show our customers and team members just how much they mean to us," Doug Meijer said.
