Our differences unite us

It is with great anticipation, and some fear, that I begin this journey with all of you in discussing one of our greatest assets -- our ethnic diversity. It is my hope that in our journey we will be able to learn more about what unites us versus what divides us.

I am looking forward to hearing your stories and allowing your stories to help us gain a greater understanding of your experience and, in so doing, enrich our own lives.

I will also ask you to challenge us when you see injustices that our community has overlooked. Dr. King once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

We are living in a community that is growing in its ethnic diversity. How we respond to that growth will determine our quality of life.

In the weeks to come, I hope to have all of us discuss how our ethnic diversity impacts our social lives, our economy, our politics, our faith, our educational system, etc.

A Chinese proverb states, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one single step.”

Today, we have taken that “single step,” and I look forward to sharing this seat with all of you.
