As we enter the month of June and celebrate Father’s Day, it's only natural that we begin to reflect on the men in our lives.

Whether it be a father, husband, uncle or even a son, many will spend considerable time in celebration.

This year, in addition to celebrating the fathers in your life, consider observing the 20th anniversary of men’s health month as well.

Designed around men’s health week, which is June 9-15, the goal of the month is to heighten awareness of preventable health issues, while encouraging early detection and treatment.

Events are held throughout the community that feature cooking demonstrations, blood pressure checks and opportunities for physical fitness and education.

So this Father’s Day, consider wearing blue as a continued sign of awareness for this important issue.

Treating men’s health as a family issue will make sure that the topic receives the attention necessary to implement change.

We know that men tend to interact with the health system differently than woman. Men have been shown to put off regular medical care.

Nationally, more than 20 percent of men smoke cigarettes, nearly 35 percent of men are obese and just over 30 percent of men have hypertension. For men of color, the numbers paint a picture even more bleak.

While the statistics are disheartening, there are several things that can be done every day to improve one’s health.

  • If you smoke, quit
  • Work towards a healthy weight and maintain it
  • Get active. As little as 30 minutes a day can make a big difference
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables
  • Reduce salt intake
  • Drink more water and keep alcohol in moderation

So this year, instead of struggling to find the perfect gift, consider the gift of life.

Ensure that your beloved is up-to-date on health screenings and that he understands the importance of healthy living.
