West Shore Community College - Center Stage Theater, Arts and Science Center
3000 N. Stiles Rd.
West Shore Community College is acquiring a third original work of America’s first abstract artist (and 55-year Michigan resident) Manierre Dawson that will be dedicated in a public ceremony. Dawson first publicly exhibited his art a century ago at the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art next to Picasso, Matisse and Cézanne and is finally being recognized for his place in history. The public is invited to attend the free dedication ceremony whereby Dawson’s grandson, Peter Lockwood, will formally present the painting from his family’s private collection. Free parking is available. A reception with refreshments will follow immediately until 6 p.m. in the lobby adjacent to the Manierre Dawson Gallery, which will be open for attendees to see the college’s two other Dawson works in its permanent collection.
