KENTWOOD — Liberty Mutual has announced it will add 30 new personal insurance claims positions in Kentwood by the end of June as part of the consolidation of its Midwest claims operations.

The Boston-based Liberty Mutual Group will concurrently close the Bingham Farms, Mich., location, and employees relocating from that area will fill some of the Kentwood positions.

The company also held a career open house last week to attract prospective employees.

Not only will this be a personnel expansion, but the Liberty Mutual physical expansion is already underway and is expected to be completed within a week.

"Right now we have the capacity to accommodate a few of the new staff that will be joining the office, but needed to make room for about 20 more to accommodate the increase from about 75 employees right now to over 100 by the end of June," said Glenn Greenberg, public relations consultant for Liberty Mutual.

The Kentwood office will look to fill five types of positions, including customer claims representatives, Michigan no-fault claims specialists, claims teams managers, auto damage appraisers and office assistants.

Greenberg noted that the decision to bring the expansion to Kentwood, instead of the Bingham Farms location, was made because of the favorable talent pool the area has to offer.

"We've had a good presence in the area for about eight or nine years now," Greenberg said. "And there is also more of a demand for a larger office in that area (Kentwood). It was just an ideal location."

The physical expansion will take the building from its existing 9,450 square feet to 15,586 square feet.

In addition, the consolidation will give the company more flexibility to handle claims in Michigan, improve efficiency and capitalize on economies of sale, added Erik McDowell, Midwest region claims manager for Liberty Mutual.

"Since 1994 Kentwood has provided Liberty Mutual with exceptional talent to provide high quality claims service to customers in western Michigan, and we look forward to expanding our operations there to benefit more of our customers within the state," said McDowell.

Located at 2450 44th St. SE, Suite 308, the Kentwood office offers personal insurance sales, service and claims and business insurance sales.

Liberty Mutual has 15 offices throughout Michigan offering a variety of personal and commercial insurance products. The company employs more than 500 people in Michigan.

The Liberty Mutual Group, a diversified international group of insurance companies and one of the largest multi-line insurers in the North American property and casualty insurance industry, offers a wide range of products and services.

These include homeowners and private passenger auto, general liability, commercial auto, commercial property, group life and disability, individual life and annuities, and international programs.

Liberty Mutual has been a provider of worker's compensation insurance, programs and services in the United States for more than 65 years.

Having celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2002, Liberty Mutual Group today employs 35,000 people in more than 800 offices throughout the world.
