GRAND RAPIDS — The DeVos and Van Andel families have announced another joint partnership designed to bring a hotel to downtown Grand Rapids.

The families made the announcement this morning, just days before Gallium Group was to make a presentation to the Grand Rapids City Commission regarding a new convention hotel on Calder Plaza.

The DeVos and Van Andel families have purchased the Israels Designs for Living building on Pearl Street, just across from the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel.

They said the move was made based on a feasibility study conducted this summer, which recommended another downtown hotel to meet the growing demand for rooms expected as DeVos Place convention center draws more visitors to the area.

The two families already own property adjacent to the Israels building.

Bob Israels said he and his family were delighted to help support the DeVos and Van Andel families’ goal to develop a new hotel on this site, but added that Israels is not deserting the downtown area.

The plan is to move the Israels Designs for Living operation from the building on Pearl Street to the Widdicomb building at 601 Fifth St, a change that he describes as a new page in the company’s history.

“When it became apparent that our location was the best site for a new downtown hotel, we decided to do our part to make that project possible,” said Israels.

Details on the scope of the hotel development project will be determined at a later date.

“Our ultimate goal is to develop a hotel on this site as part of the commitment we started making years ago to the growth of our downtown and that’s been continuing with the Van Andel Arena and the new DeVos Place convention center,” said Jay Van Andel.
