A Moving Estimate
GRAND RAPIDS — The city estimated last week it could cost just under $64 million to move a handful of departments and hundreds of vehicles from the Public Works Island at 201 Market SW to new sites, none of which have been identified.
But Deputy City Manager Eric DeLong did say the city was looking for 20 acres of land, 4.2 more acres than the current site. Because no multi-story buildings would be constructed on the new campus property so more land is needed.
Local engineering firm Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber assisted the city in arriving at the potential relocation costs that are listed below.
|Department||Future Campus||Other Location||Total|
|Parks & Recreation, Operations||$8,220,000||$8,220,000|
|Parks & Recreation, Administration||$23,110,000||$2,390,000||$2,390,000|
|Information Technology Equipment||$4,000,000||$4,000,000|
|Engineering Field Services||$180,000||$180,000|
Notes: The costs listed under “Other Location” assume new site acquisition, new site improvements and new facility construction. Dollars listed are 2008 dollars. The “future campus” needs about 252,000 square feet, while the other locations total roughly 34,000 square feet.
