GRAND RAPIDS — Five more board members were added to the West Michigan Sports Commission. The new members bring the organization's total membership to 41, one over the group's initially targeted number.

County commissioners appointed Mel Atkins, Robert Hughes, Dave Mehney, Rick Mirandette, and Robert Partridge. WMSC Vice Chairman Wayman Britt said the organization can have up to 60 members. But Britt, also an administrative assistant at KentCounty, said it was unlikely the commission would ever grow that large.

The sports commission will hold its first annual meeting Sept. 26 at the new JW Marriott Hotel. MSU head basketball coach Tom Izzo will be the event's featured speaker. WMSC is charged with bringing new sporting events into the area to broaden the region's hospitality industry.
